Say NO To Wax!

Why You Should Avoid Wax in Your Dreadlocks

If you've been researching dreadlocks, you've probably seen people recommend wax as a way to “help” dreads lock up. But the reality is, wax is one of the worst things you can put in your dreadlocks—and here’s why.

Wax Doesn’t Wash Out

Wax is designed to repel water, meaning that once it’s in your dreads, it’s incredibly difficult to remove. Even with hot water and shampoo, wax stays trapped inside, leading to long-term buildup that makes your dreads feel heavy and greasy.

It Attracts Dirt & Lint

Because wax is sticky, it collects dirt, dust, lint, and other debris over time. This buildup makes your dreads look dull and feel dirty, no matter how often you wash them.

It Prevents Your Dreads from Locking Naturally

Healthy dreadlocks tighten and mature over time as loose hairs knot and weave together. When you coat them in wax, you’re essentially gluing the hair together rather than allowing the natural locking process to happen. This can lead to stiff, artificial-looking dreadlocks that never truly mature.

Wax Can Cause Mildew & Odor

Because wax repels water, it traps moisture inside your dreads, creating the perfect environment for mildew (a.k.a. dread rot). Over time, this can lead to a musty, unpleasant smell that’s difficult to get rid of.

A Better Alternative: The Crochet Method

Instead of using wax, I use the crochet method, which tightens and shapes dreads without any product buildup. This technique creates neater, stronger, and more natural-looking dreadlocks that will mature beautifully over time.

If you’ve used wax in your dreads before, don’t panic! A proper **dread detox** can help remove buildup and get your dreads back on track.
